Sunday 22nd May – Travelling – Crap – Rain :(
It rained quite a lot in the night but it didn’t keep us awake – we quite like it. Heard the tractors going out to low tide around 5.30. Slept till nearly 9 again! Raining when we got up but we did manage a quick walk up to look at the beach before we left. We drove along the sea front before heading out to the motorway to Rouen and on our usual track to Orleans. We stopped for our lunch near the windmill we always pass about 10 miles outside Orleans. It rained most of the way. On to Briare which was very disappointing – too many camper vans have discovered our half way point! It was too wet to go to the river bank option and both the aires in Briare itself were full of great white elephants! We went to our first ever stop here near the canal basin but it has no camper van signs up now. Headed out of town to a small place called Ouzouer sur Trezee which is on the Briare canal and about 7km out of town. It is a very faded and neglected little place which was probably once very beautiful :( We originally stopped in the car park for the village hall and had a read and then tea (Lidl gammon joint, small fried potatoes and salad). When we got out for a walk (because amazingly it stopped raining!) we found that they had a small camper aire on the other side of the hall which has a little shower block and is free for 48 hours! How generous! We moved over (ran over my stepladder AGAIN so it matches the old mangled one now!!) and went for a proper walk around the village and up to the church. The canal is very pretty and the small river Trezee which comes in to join the canal flows along behind the houses.

Monday 23rd May – Travel – Crap – Rain :(
Woke to yet more rain but read and then got up and had a wonderful shower:) What a generous village! The shower was lovely and warm and spotlessly clean. Had breakfast and then left there and drove back to Briare Lidl. Got some supplies then headed out towards Nevers, missed a turning and ended up going through Cosne Sur Loire but although we did have to fanny about a bit it meant we got very cheap diesel Went across our usual ski route towards Macon which again had lots of diversions because of extending the motorway but it is a pretty route through Charolais country, lots of white cows and calves and the sculpture. Before Charolle, we passed Decize, stopped at Digoin for lunch and a read but the best bit was we saw a big adult wild boar at the side of the road!!! It just wandered out of the field, looked a bit confused and went back in again but we got a really good look at him On our detour to Macon we saw a signpost to the Butte de Suin and decided to go and have a look because it had a table of orientation! Still raining but we could see how beautiful the view would be. We drove round the various car parks and finally stopped near some rocks a long way away from the other camper van in the other car park! We had a cuppa and read then when it did stop raining we walked around the hill looking at the view which had appeared under the cloud and made our way up the round tower which has been made into the table of orientation. The 360 degree views are beautiful. Walked down the hill to the village and went into the church. It is deserted other than one house where you could see the tv was on and a car was parked outside. We got back to the van just as it started to pour again! We are hoping it clears out in the morning so we can go on the short walk around various rocks and standing stones!

Tuesday 24th May – Walks **** mainly cloudy
Good night in our quiet spot on the hill at Suin:) The rain has gone but it is still a bit on the cloudy side. After breakfast we set out to walk round the ‘Legend’ rock walk. The path took you right down into a dense wood and we saw ‘Ceaser’ we have no idea why it is called that! Then after much up and down we returned to the village and looked at the map which showed the Dolman was down a path by the van so we set off down there and found lots more rocks and the Dolman:) Packed up the van and set off to try and find the Grand Site of France – Roches de Solutre which is just below Macon. Beautiful journey there, lots of vineyards, and after 30 miles we thought we had found the place. Pulled up to read the sign and somebody hooted us so we turned up to the right and found a walking sign to a table of orientation. This turned out to be a wild goose chase. It was a lovely walk in the woods even though a bit wet underfoot but it didn’t lead anywhere so we returned to the van for lunch. I did find the table of orientation in the completely opposite direction to the sign! Went back to the cross roads where we were hooted into making a split decision and the turning we needed was only a few metres further on! We parked in the large car park near the beautiful and imposing Roches de Solutre and walked down to the entrance. There is a museum of prehistory here, built entirely underground but we weren’t tempted to go in. We carried on up to the very top of the Roche, meeting a class of schoolchildren coming down and well over half gave us a cheery bonjour! There were some older people going up too and some of them were a worry – huffing and puffing! When we got to the top we sat and had our water perched right on the edge!! Walked back down and made our way back to the van. We are staying here tonight as it is a nice car park with a lovely view and there is another van like ours only red down the way. Had a read and then started tea. Just got the pan boiling when the gas went out! I took all the bikes off and replaced the gas, filled the water tank from our bottles and then when I was putting the bikes back realised that Mag’s puncture had reared its ugly head again and decided to mend that! Ate tea then went out and mended what turned out to be a pretty big hole! It is a wonder the green goo held it up at all! We went for a walk to the outskirts of the village at the end of the roman road down from the car park and by the time we got back to the van we were whacked!!
